All About Our Home Paint Colors

I get asked all the time about the paint colors we used, so I thought I would do a more detailed post on the three colors we used throughout our home. With the exception of the boys’ rooms where we added a little bit of Clare.

EXTERIOR – BM Gray Owl

For the exterior, I knew I didn’t want another “white house.” I actually picked our window color first, because I also knew I didn’t want white or black – I wanted to do something different but also something neutral. I came across this slate window color and never looked back. White would be too stark against the gray windows so I stumbled upon a home Alyssa Rosenheck shot and I fell in love with the neutral light gray. Either I found out it was Gray Owl or I pretended it was – either way, BM Gray Owl was the winner. We painted body, trim and shutters all the same color. Our T&G at our porch, lanai and breezeway were color matched the window slate color for a nice contrast.

INTERIOR – BM Swiss Coffee

The whole mood of our home is light, airy and warm and stark white wasn’t going to work. We have a TON of natural light which gave us the flexibility to explore more warmer whites. Shea and Syd at Studio McGee did Swiss Coffee at their house, so I put it on my short list. Like them, I did have to play with the strength of the paint – we did 50% on the walls and 75% on the shiplap. Our cabinets are a stock white from Mid Continent Cabinetry, so I wanted to make sure the color of the cabinet was warm and still in a similar tone with the wall color. They couldn’t be more of a perfect fit if you ask me! I prefer a flat finish on walls and wall details like shiplap or paneling and then semi-gloss for all things trim (base boards, crown, door casings etc.) We’re also big coffee drinkers, so I liked the name. #classic

ACCENTS – BM French Beret

To add some dimension and elevate some everyday areas, I wanted a paint color that was a bit moody. Since we had warm whites, and light grays in the mix a super dark blue stuck out to me. I love how the consistent use of unlacquered brass hardware really stood out on the cabinets and turned a not so exciting media/toy storage cabinet in a total focal point. To give it some purpose, we also painted our custom mudroom cabinet/locker/desk area the same color so in one sight line it all kinda goes.
